Same-Day Electricity Service in Texas
Qualifying Texas addresses can have Ambit Energy service activated the same day you enroll — no waiting for weeks. Here's exactly how the process works, what determines eligibility, and what to expect.
Same-day service is not guaranteed. Availability depends on address, meter status, eligibility, plan terms, enrollment time, and utility processing.
How Same-Day Activation Works
Same-day electricity activation in Texas depends on three things: your local utility (TDU), your meter type, and the time you complete enrollment. When all three align, Ambit can coordinate service start for the same business day.
- 1
Enroll Before the Cutoff
Most Texas TDUs (Transmission and Distribution Utilities) accept same-day service requests submitted before approximately 3:00–5:00 PM CT. Oncor (Dallas–Fort Worth area) typically processes same-day orders received by 3:00 PM CT. CenterPoint (Houston area) and AEP Texas (South/West Texas) typically accept requests until around 4:00–5:00 PM CT on business days. These windows are set by the utility, not Ambit — earlier is always safer.
- 2
Smart Meter Required
Same-day activation uses remote switching — a technician does not come to your address. This is only possible with a smart (Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI) meter. Texas has reached near-universal smart meter deployment statewide since PUCT mandated rollout. If your home has an older electromechanical meter, your utility may need to schedule a physical switch, which takes longer.
- 3
Complete Your Enrollment
You'll provide a Social Security Number or ITIN for identity verification, your service address, move-in date, and payment method. Ambit confirms plan terms and submits the service order to your local TDU. Keep an eye on your email for the enrollment confirmation — it contains your new account number.
- 4
TDU Processes the Switch
Your local utility (not Ambit) physically activates the service. The TDU processes orders in batches during business hours Monday through Friday. Saturday orders are typically processed the following Monday, and availability varies by utility on holidays. Ambit confirms the activation on its end once the TDU signals completion.
- 5
Power Is On
Once the TDU activates your meter, power is live. Ambit sends a final confirmation email. If power does not come on within two hours after the confirmed activation window, contact your TDU's outage line — not Ambit. Ambit handles billing; the TDU owns the wires.
Who Qualifies for Same-Day Service
Same-day electricity activation is available when all of the following apply:
- Your address is in Texas's deregulated electricity market (most areas served by Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas West, or TNMP)
- Your address has a smart (AMI) meter — the vast majority of Texas residential addresses do
- You complete enrollment by the TDU's same-day cutoff time (typically 3:00–5:00 PM CT on business days)
- No outstanding balance or hold with the utility at that service address that would require manual review
- You are enrolling for standard residential service — commercial accounts may have different processing timelines
Same-day service is not guaranteed. Availability depends on address, meter status, eligibility, plan terms, enrollment time, and utility processing.
What If Same-Day Isn't Available
If your enrollment doesn't meet the same-day requirements, here's what typically happens next:
Standard Next-Business-Day Enrollment
Most enrollments that miss the same-day cutoff are scheduled for service start the following business day. This is the most common scenario for evening enrollments or addresses with minor eligibility nuances.
Transferring Existing Service
If you're moving service from one address to another (not starting new), the process is a transfer rather than a new activation. Transfer timelines vary slightly — call us at (361) 788-3521 or visit our transfer service contact page.
Need Help Figuring It Out?
Our team can check availability for your specific address before you commit to a plan. A quick call tells you whether same-day is on the table and what the actual activation date would be.
